How to export your RSS feeds as OPML

An OPML file is a small file with the list of feeds you subscribe to, including your folders. Every feed reader can export one. You need it to check which of your feeds come from Reddit, and it’s a good backup to have anyway.

Menu names change between app versions. If a step doesn’t match what you see, look for Import/Export or OPML in your reader’s settings.

Feedly

  1. Open Feedly on the web (not the phone app) and sign in.
  2. Go to feedly.com/i/opml.
  3. Save the file. It has your feeds and folders, but not Boards or Read Later.

Inoreader

  1. Open Preferences.
  2. Go to Import, Export, Backup (sometimes called Import/Export).
  3. Export your subscriptions as OPML.

NetNewsWire

Mac: choose File › Export Subscriptions… from the menu bar, pick the account if you have more than one, and save.

iPhone and iPad: tap Settings on the Feeds screen, then Export Subscriptions.

Reeder

Open Settings, tap the account your feeds are in, then tap Export as OPML.

FreshRSS

Go to Subscription management, open Import / export, and click Export.

Miniflux

Open Feeds, then click Export.

NewsBlur

Open the account menu and choose Download OPML. Large accounts get the file by email. It may end in .xml, which is fine: it’s the same thing.

Feedbin

Go to Settings, then Import/Export, and export your subscriptions.

Any other reader

Look in settings for Export, Backup or OPML. Self-hosted readers usually have it on the subscriptions or feeds page.

What’s inside an OPML file

It’s plain text, so you can open it in any text editor. Each feed is one line:

<outline text="r/selfhosted" xmlUrl="https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/.rss"/>

Private feeds, like your Reddit saved posts, contain a secret token in the link. The checker hides it and never includes it in anything you download.

No reader any more, or no file?

You can still use the checker. Switch to Type subreddits and enter the names you follow, one per line.
